Amazon require one for nearly every category so you will need to get a UPC to create your listing and send your inventory to Amazon.

Wherever you go on line at Amazon, you’ll find that everything that you purchase has a UPC barcode on it.  A barcode is an optical machine-readable representation of data.

Amazon verifies the authenticity of product UPCs by checking the GS1 database. 

GS1 is an organization which establishes identification standards for various industries and licenses unique GS1 Company Prefixes, which are necessary to create UPCs.

Amazon FBA Barcode Requirements – What is GS1

• Anyone else selling UPC’s are essentially reselling codes they got from GS1
• While this is perfectly legal if they got them before 2002, the problem is Amazon implying they wanted to be able to verify that a code was unique in the GS1 database

UPC’s that do not match the information provided by GS1 will be considered invalid.

Buy a UPC from a trusted reseller

• Much simpler and cheaper ($12+)
• Unknown if there will be future issues
• This is a business decision that you will need to make.

If you are going to print labels, do not have them printed until after you list your product successfully on Amazon.

Amazon require to be able to differentiate sellers based on their Fulfilment Network Stock Keeping Unit (FNSKU) to ensure any queries, complaints or questions can be directed to the correct seller.

This internal barcode label allows Amazon to do this. This only relates to Fulfilment By Amazon (FBA).
